59 years ago, the Russians launched their second probe into space, this time carrying a living creature (A dog named Laika). This worried Americans not only because they were very far behind the Russians in the space race, but also because the fear of nuclear attacks from space was an ever growing fear. Sputnik 2 carried a variety of sensors, but the most notable of which was a dog. They sent a dog up to test the effect of 0 gravity on animals before they sent up a person.
